Greenworks 24052 Review by Albert Chen

The chipper came three days after order. Assembly was done within 30 minutes. It would be helpful if the instruction keep the part numbers consistent.

The blades are attached to a wheel. The wheel is attached to the motor with a screw in the center. This means the screw will become loose as the wheel meets resistance - such as cutting wood. Within two hours of operation, the wheel assembly came apart and the blades were cracked. The screws holding the blades were also cracked.

I was very disappointed and had to return the item.

Greenworks 24052 Review by Sugarplumfaerie (Whidbey Island, Washington)

I love this chipper. I am amazed at how well it chips branches. I had been using a gas powered BearCat chipper and got tired of the the finicky carburetor. Also it was very heavy and even with wheels was difficult for me to move around my yard. (physically about the same size as the Greenworks machine). The Greenworks is great. As the instructions say - it does not do green. It also does not do anything viney or grassy. Even woody branches that grow like vines - tends to wrap around the mechanism inside. Easy to clear out - if you have to test different items like I did. If you have tree branches - it is super fantastic. Twigs can slip through and come out in about 4" lengths, but really don't show up when the chips are spread. I will say it again - it does a really great job on branches. It is not one of those chippers with a big hopper than you can just throw anything into - it works well for its intended purpose - as advertised. I would have given it 5 stars but I wanted to switch the blades after several hours of use - (it seemed to be faster when the blades were really brand new)_but could not loosen all of the screws holding the blades and was stripping the heads trying. I called customer service and they gave me the name of the closest warranty service center so I could get this done. However, the service center said they did not work with Greenworks - so I had to call customer service back. Once again, they were very helpful and offered to just send me the screws and said they would contact the service center right way and call me right back. I did not order the screws and I never heard back from customer service. (that was Wed morning - this is Sat morning). I will call them again on Monday and have them send me extra screws - but I really would have liked a call back as promised. The machine works great and I love it. And I am getting a lot of work done. I have been using this little machine almost every day for a week or so now - what a little work horse!

Greenworks 24052 Review by Lawrence F. Povirk (Richmond, Virginia)

I bought this unit to replace a German Lescha Zak 1800 chipper (no longer manufactured) that I had for many years until its motor burnt out, so that is my standard for comparison. One big difference is that whereas the Zak made a terrible racket, the Greenworks isn't nearly so bad, no louder than your average leaf blower even when it's chipping. Of course the main reason for this is that while the Zak was all heavy-gauge steel, the Greenworks is mostly plastic, with hollows that muffle the noise. So while it seems sturdy enough and I appreciate the reduction in both noise and weight, I do have some doubts about its long-term durability. Also, while the Zak took a good half-minute to accelerate to speed and had to be absolutely clear of any debris to start, the Greenworks seems to have more starting power and comes up to speed instantly. Assembly is a cinch, just four bolts so it's almost impossible to get it wrong. The most difficult part is snapping the mini-hubcaps onto the wheels.

The unit accepts up to 1-3/8" diameter branches, and that's a rather strict limit. If there's a knot or branch point that's larger, it will prevent the branch from entering. It comes with a stuffer piston that doesn't seem to do much. Fortunately, it's rarely needed, as the combination of gravity, airflow and chipping action pulls whatever material is loaded in the hopper into the blades pretty efficiently. In fact, as others have noted, you have to physically hold back larger branches, otherwise they feed so fast they will slow down the motor almost to a stall. It works well on both dry and green trimmings, but there is a grate consisting of discs on a rod that occludes the exit chute, and if there is too much foliage on the branches it tends to clog up there. The resulting chippings are rather fine, the largest pieces no more than 1" x 1/4" and about 1/8" thick, which is OK but just means the blades and motor are working that much harder and the mulch is going to decay that much faster, so I'd actually prefer a somewhat coarser grind.

The collection bag is a definite weak point. It's small, flimsy, awakard to attach and unload, and fills up quickly. It's made of a light mesh, probably nylon, over a 3/16" steel rod frame. While the frame seems strong enough, the mesh bag was already fraying around one of the joints after only 3 or 4 loads. Of course, you don't have to use it. What works better is to skip the bag, roll the whole unit onto a small tarp, chip away to your heart's content, then gather up the chippings with the tarp.

Despite these shortcomings, I have to admit that so far at least it works pretty much as advertised, and you can't beat it for the price.
